Safest way to pay DCA

I got a letter from Connaught collections this morning from a debt that I have not been able to pay for a couple of years. I have just moved house so and this is the first letter from them.

On the back it lists various ways of making a payment
credit or debit card
cheque, postal order or bankers draft
bank transfer
direct debit or standing order.

What are the pros and cons of the payment methods above?

They do not have my current phone number (and they will never get it). And I do not want to give them any more information than I have to. Finally I do not want them to have the ability to take more money from me than I can afford to do. The last time I was paying them regularly they wanted £110 a month. I can afford only £30 a month ideally less than this.

Not sure but definatley not by direct debit as although covered by the DD gurantee i've heard of several companies taking payments thye shouldn't.

If it were me, I'd pay by either standing order or a bank transfer. Both of these are controlled at your end and they have no ability to take any money from you. Benefit of the standing order is that you won't forget to pay it but there's a chance you'd be hit by charges if it is automatically paid when you don't have funds.

I wouldn't pay by card if I were you or direct debit. As they could set up a recurring payment and take money whenever they want. Direct debit is controlled at their end so they may take more money than you wanted (although ultimately you could get this back under DD guarantee, it's not worth the hassle)

I wouldn't bother with the paper methods as I find them a lot of hassle. Plus I think there's a charge for postal orders and bankers drafts.

So if I pay by bank transfer what information do they get? can they use these details to take money without authorisation at a later date?

They shouldn't get any information other than the amount paid and whatever you write in the reference box which should be your account number. Your bank may also supply your name. Nothing else though.

    Pay by Standing Order
you are in control of what gets paid and when,
and only pay what you can realisticly afford to pay

another good thing about standing orders ;) you get their account details so you can pay of a extra if an when you have it:cool:

When I've had to pay DCA's I have always used a cheque. (admittedly I've always made f&f offers) my logic being that IF they try and pull a fast one there is a clear and undeniable paper trail that even a judge would understand....

Catflea the thing is I do not want them to have a copy of my signature under any circumstances. I am sure a print out of my "Daily Payment" will show a regular commitment to clearing the debt :)
