Hi!
I have used this site often in the past and it has been quite useful.
I have joined the forums to ask a question which I am hoping someone may be able to help me out on!
Right! Where do I start!
I am 18. I turned 18 this April (April 2006).
In December 2005 (I was 17), I went on to https://www.next.co.uk to order my mum a Christmas present. They didn't have the top she wanted in the stores so I had to go online.
Anyway, I put in all my details in a bit of a rush, and then it wouldn’t accept my order as it said I had to be over 18.
Stupidly, I changed my birth year to 1986, rather than 1988, so it would allow me to order, thinking it won't hurt. This now looked as though I was 19, rather than 17.
I ticked the box for the Terms and Conditions thinking it was all the usual stuff that most websites say. Had my debit card ready to pay them, but on the next screen it said I should expect my order soon and there is nothing to pay now!
Anyway, the top came and so did a NEXT directory catalogue for me. I had to pay £3.75 and about £20 for the top. I paid them by using Internet Banking.
Every so often I get a new NEXT directory catalogue through which I send them a payment for, through internet banking.
I didn't think much of the whole thing, thought it was quite good to be honest.

Anyway, when I turned 18, you start thinking about credit cards, etc. I have none so far, nor an overdraft. I have nothing on credit... Or so I thought!
My twin brother got a copy of his credit report. We have the same date of birth and address.
I was a bit surprised, and so was he, to find a NEXT directory account on his credit report under my name with a fake date of birth!!!
The good thing is that no payments have been missed!
I have read that he can get himself disassociated with me, so my electoral roll information won’t appear on his credit report.
Question 1: Can he disassociate himself with the fake "person" as well? As it is a different name?
If so, that is great, as his report will be fine.
I will get a copy of mine soon; I know I don't really need to as mine should be the same as my brothers.
I will disassociate myself with him, so I have just my details on my report.
Question 2: Can I disassociate myself with the fake "person" as well? Or will this prove tricky as it is the same name and date of birth, except with a different birth year?
If I can, great! I will close the NEXT account and that's that...
But I have a feeling it won’t be that simple??
If my brother or I cannot disassociate myself with the fake "person", surely there must be a way to remove it from our credit reports without closing the account and waiting 6 years?
Looking through my NEXT bits and bobs, I have the credit agreement that I should have signed and returned, but never did. Would this be anything to work with?
Here is what the Terms say, that I must have clicked when I ordered the top:
I understand that a credit account will be opened for me and that there will be a £3.75 charge for the Next Directory which will be invoiced later. I confirm that I am over 18 and UK resident.
Can anyone offer any advice on what I can do? Rather than just cancel the account and wait 6 years?
I got myself into a bit of a mess!
Any help, much appreciated.

Oh dear, I can only suggest contacting Next and cancelling the account and wait.
You have broken the law and they could prosecute, as far as I'm aware, for fraudNo longer using this account for new posts from 20130 -

Once your brother applys for the disassociation this will be reciprocal on "your" reportchris_p wrote:Question 2: Can I disassociate myself with the fake "person" as well? Or will this prove tricky as it is the same name and date of birth, except with a different birth year?
technically yes, although you are far better off just closing the account and keeping quite
The long and short of it is you have committed fraud, and the presence of a signed CCA agreement is of little relevance.
As far as your “real” file go’s, you may just get lucky (if you have no other credit agreements) and when you apply with your real details the systems at the CRA’s will probably see you as a new person and not link the other name, if they do you can then undertake a notice of disassociation.
Anyway…..a lesson learnt I hope ! It’s hard enough remembering my opinions - without remembering my reasons for them :rolleyes:0 -
Thank you for both replies.
file_wizzard, that is very helpful! Yes, a lesson has definitely been learned here!
Many thanks again. A really useful site!Chris. :cool:0
