Lengthy Travel by Any Means Increases Clot Risk

Lengthy Travel by Any Means Increases Clot Risk
Whether by road, rail, or air, travel for more than four hours caused a two-fold increase in the risk of deep-vein thrombosis.
The risk was considerably higher for individuals who use oral contraceptives, those who carry the factor V Leiden mutation, and those who are particularly tall, short, or obese.

What about sitting in front of the telly for 5 hours on a wet Sunday and only getting up to go to the loo, it is the same isn't it?

  • Absolutely.... Any form of immobilisation can increase the risk of DVT. I guess the difference to watching telly as you'd sit up, lay down, get crisps, a cup of tea so you might be slightly more active when plopped on the couch than sitting on the plane.

True, as would be sitting at your computer for 12hrs or sitting in a wheelchair without moving your feet. You need to move to assist your circulation, so remaining in the same position for too long may result in problems.

The reason I posted the link was to remind folk of the need to take precautions WHATEVER form of transport they are using as I think many people only think about this problem from a long haul airflight perspective and don't realise the same problem occurs on long coach/car/train journeys if they don't either stop and walk around for a bit or try to exercise in some other way.
