Gas Bill gone into BR

Hi everyone,

Wonder if anyone can shed any light on this please?

Before going BR in March me and OH contacted our gas company regarding our outstanding bill which we could not afford to pay in one lumpsum and were told by them we could pay by monthly DD. We had made two payments so far and thought everything was ok but today received a final gas bill demand saying that we owe them over £400!
I have just phoned them up and they have said because we went BR the whole amount of the bill has gone into our bankruptcy.

We didn't list the gas bill on our BR forms because we thought we would be ok paying it monthly. Just want to know how has this happened and do we have to inform the OR that we have received this bill or will he be aware of it and we need not bother him?

Sorry it's a bit long winded but just a little confused and shocked.

Contact the OR. In my experience they're never as clued up as they should be about your situation, mainly because they have so many cases now days. Also ring the gas company and give them the details of your OR. You shouldn't have to deal with it now, that's the ORs job x

It happened with me, I didn't include my utilities in my BR, I never considered them a debt as I paid by DD same amount every month. I got a letter saying they had closed my old account and opened a new one, when I rang to find out why they said because of my BR.

It was a few months after my BR and apparently at BR date I owed them a little (winter months) which they sent me a final bill for but it was not to pay, it was just for my records. Then they credited my new account with the extra that I had paid since my BR and I somehow ended up in credit!

My supplier is British Gas, who I've since discovered are listed on my CRF, so I'm assuming that's how they found out about my BR.

I would have thought it would have to be included in your BR as you were in arrears?

This has confused me somewhat.

I pay my Gas and Electric to British Gas..fized amount each month and I think I am a little in credit at the moment.

I will list my payment on my SOA but I shouldn't have to worry should I?

Yes we were very confused as we didn't list our gas or electricity as debts on our SOA but it seems as we were a little in arrears they obviously put it in our bankruptcy!

I hadn't considered these would be included in the BR. Do the utility companies let you continue paying monthly after or do they make you get a pre-payment meter?

They just closed my old account, opened a new one and DDs carried on as normal.

When we phoned gas company they just said they'd closed our old account and opened a new one and we could continue to pay by DD but they would monitor our account for six months.....so hopefully everything will be ok.
