Westcot Credit Services

Hi after a bit of advice,

I have just received an address verification letter from Westcot which has been forwarded to my new address, when I rang to ask why this was sent they said I had an outstanding debt of £160, this debt was paid off over 2 years ago. I have moved twice in the past two years and recived this letter the first time also at which point I called and they said it was their error and they apologised and said they would remove it from the system.

The agent I spoke with today said the debt is current and comes from not cancelling a subscription I didn't even know I had, I thought the bill 2 years ago was the end of it and have had no communication with the company since then. I have written to them asking for details of the account and the subscription etc but was wondering what do to if they do not relent and insist I owe this debt.

I knew nothing about this subscription and am puzzled it has come back like this after being told 2 years ago that this was the end of it.

Thanks for any help!

Firstly stop phoning them & refuse to answer security questions if they ring you.
Woopey do for them that they managed to verify were you live...now tell them to politely go away otherwise you'll report them to the OFT & trading standards.
They have no legal power to any money off you whatsoever - only a county court does & wesclott wont go anywhere near such a place coz it will cost them to do so.

It really depends on the circumstances. Generally if debt collectors are brought in the business will cancel anything you have with them, case in point mobile phone and gym contracts.

I would find it very unusual and certainly something for the OFT to investigate if they have billed you for a subscription over the last 2 years. Especially due to the previous circumstances and the fact you didn't receive the goods/services over the last 2 years.

Just send Westcot the prove it letter, and await written confirmation from them.
I would always avoid calling a debt collector, they bully and more importantly lie on the phone. Keep to written letters. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=11570893&postcount=2

Dig out your letter from 2 years ago that proved the debt was paid off, you may find it useful if they come back with some factious story.

They do need to provide you with proof that you owe the debt - the standard letter recommended is the prove it letter - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=11570893&postcount=2

but if the letter you sent contains similar information then that should be okay. The key advice is not to admit that you owe the money. Also don't bother ringing them its best to do everything in writing.
