Mbna – Rude And Bullying Tactics

MY OPINION – MBNA – RUDE AND BULLYING TACTICS

I just received a call from MBNA. They informed me of my debt (which I obviously knew). I then told them I was with payplan, at this point the obnoxious Irish man (I only put the Irish bit in just in case in rang any bells with others …I am not anti Irish… just had to clear that up) he started saying I should take responsibility of my debt and to take it seriously. I told him in a calm voice that I was at work and could not discuss it. He then repeated the above and told me to go to a quieter place as it was very loud and asked is my work place was always very loud. He then said that the debt is mine and not payplans so I should deal with it. At this point I told him he was a rude little man and put the phone down. He tried to call back but I did not answer.

Has anyone else had probs with mbna and anyone with any advice?
I was going to call Monday to complain!!!

I think you did the right thing. Stay calm & polite, tell him you're not able to speak to him on the phone and not to ring you again. Then quietly put the phone down. Don't answer if it rings again. Don't enter into any argument with them. Well done, it's not easy to think clearly when caught unawares - which is why they do it.

New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.
  • From my viewpoint I would have told them not to phone me at work as if they continued to do so, I would no longer have a job and that would mean they get nothing.

There are so many of us who are at the receiving end of this type of bullying/harrassment by MBNA (just look at the current threads on the same sbject).
It seems that MBNA are quite happy, some would say deliberately so, to work in contravention of the OFT guidelines until you point them out to them. It can not be coincidence that these people are simply not aware that such guidelines exist. Neither should the onus be on the debtor to keep pointing out the 'rules'.
They are, in my opinion, flagrantly flounting the law to the point that I am convinced they actually train their telephone people (of whatever nationality) to ignore the guidelines.
Sorry, almost forgot, Don't ring to complain - water off a duck's back - write, recorded delivery, and demand a reply within 7 days.
I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

  • I have an arrangement with MBNA but recieve at least one/two letters a week. Stating they are going do this, that and the other. They are always trying to bully me into paying more. I spoke to an (irishman with a lovely accent) but he was not very!!! He tried to pressure me into paying more, i explianed that if he looked at my notes that he was to only correspond via writing as i had sent a letter requesting this sometime ago. Then very politely said goodbye put the phone down.

  • I had bi-daily (at least) phone calls from their call entre for around 2 months and I really think the thing is is just to keep calm. KEEP teling them that you are with Payplan and no, they are not going to get any more money because you physically do not have it and you are doing your best and being fair to them. Then put it in writing for them to contact you only by letter. I've now got them to zero interest (for 12 months then a review will take place) and they've cancelled the arrears. I don't get phone calls any more but it took a long time! Hang in there hon x

My MBNA man is Irish called Dermot. We get on quite well!

He calls me at 8.10am every few days, and I always reply in a chirrpy voice- "Dermot, You've caught me in the shower again you naughty boy, but I don't intend to speak to you today either. Please write to me instead!"

It is getting silly now. This has been going on for about 4 weeks, and despite complaining to start with I haven't actually complained to the OFT. Think I need to!

Egg have gone quite, Close Assistance is driving me potty and wont go away.

    Bless em all!
  • I am looking forward to getting through my bankruptcy meeting on tuesday, then I can answer the phone and have some good news for them.
