Apartments in Venice.

I am taking my partner to Venice for a birthday surprise, he knows we are going away but does not know where.
I want to book an apartment instead of a hotel, i just feel that we would have more space and make it that extra bit special.
I was wondering if anyone could reccommend a good company. I am worried that we will find a pokey apartment and not the one they advertise in the pics.
I have tried Venere my budget is 650 euros.
Also i want to be in Venice and was wondering if there are any areas which we should avoid. I have seen some places in dosdoduro?
Its getting closer and closer and i am beginning to panic!
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks

My wife and I stayed in a hotel there with a nice large room which features on Venere.com - why do you want an apartment? You want to cook at home after going all that way to a place where there are so many great places to eat?In the United Kingdom 200,000 people are bitten by dogs every year and some people will die as a result. Of those bitten, 70% are children... So the question has to be asked....... Has the time come to ban children?0

Its just that my partner is a veggie and i know he sometimes gets fed up of eating the same things out its for the space more than anything.

As far as I know Venice is a very safe city compared to most. I work at a university and we take students out there for a term every year - any problems we've had have been on trips to other cities. Eating out is cheap compared to England so I would be inclined to go for a hotel if it's just for a week. There are also fantastic bar-cafes where you can get very cheap breakfasts (2 Euros for delicious coffee and pastries) so I wouldn't be inclined to cook. Although one good reason for having cooking facilities is the wonderful fish market at the Rialto.3-6 Month Emergency Fund #14: £9000 / £10,0000
