Dominican Republic, Which Currency to take?

Hi all,

I am off to the DR quite soon and have been trying to do a bit of research as to which currency I should take. I will use this currency to purchase trips and bits and bobs.

We are staying all inclusive in the north of the country and I already have a small amount (£50.00) of 1 dollar bills to use for tipping the room maids and barstaff. I know that I wont go through all of this on tipping, so some of it will be spent on trips.

Now, which currency should I take with me in order to spend on trips?
Should I take dollars, or just take english currency and convert it whilst I am there to the local currency or indeed more dollars!

I am currently not looking into taking travellers cheques, just hard cash, although this may change depending on your comments :)

Another couple of questions, are cash machines readily available, and are credit cards readily accepted?

I look forward to your replies

Leo
Dont you just love freshly congealed pigs blood, with a bit of fat in :D

  • US dollars are your best bet - all tourist areas and shops will be more than happy to take your dollars off you! :)

You can spend/get Dominican Pesos but they'll be harder to change up at the end of your trip.

  • Take hard Sterling cash only.

Sterling is an exceptionally strong currency abroad and the bureau's lap it up if you give them cold hard cash.

You'll get a great rate for it for changing it there rather than here.

Do NOT take traveller's cheques. In fact, those things should be banned altogether for being a rip off.

    Have a great holiday. :)
