my husband has been receiving debt letters from mackenzie hall. with the first letter it gave no detail just that he owed money. when he called up they couldnt give any info and said they would call back. he got no call back so called himself where he was told it was debt from a catalogue from 1999 and 2005 and it was for womans underwear. when informing MH that he had no such catalogue he was told it must be a mistake and it would be sorted.
today we get a letter saying we owe just under £10000. my husband called and was told it was for car finance from 1999.the original debt was for £3000. my husband purchased a car and returned it so that was the end of it but it seems the debt was left running when it shouldnt have been. however no contact was never made until now about this "debt" that he doesnt owe any way. my husband explained all this and asked for copies of all info to be sent including the original credit agreements to which he was told this would be difficult as it was 11 years ago. my husband then said he wasnt happy and would seek legal advice to which he was told they would cut the original debt by two thirds and all he had to pay was £3000.obviously my husband told them where to go as he doesnt owe the money in the first place. again he was told it must be a mistake and they would freeze the account for just now. they also told my husband that it was on record that he made a payment of the debt in 2005????all seems a bit dodgy to me.
where do we go from here? how can they ask for debt after 11 years when there has been no other contact for any type of payment since the car was returned in 1999 and how did they get my husbands address as he has moved since he purchased the car in 1999(he didnt inform of an address change as he didnt have any debt to them any more). my husband isnt worried but i am!!
help please
