someone has told me today that their child, who was born 02/10/02 is starting school this sept (aged 3) and will in effect stay in reception class for 2 years.
i have never heard of this before - can anyone clarify whether this is true or not.
my son was born 22/10/02 and i feel he would benefit from starting early, but it just doesn't sound right in my humble opinion.
thanks

im not a father but i have to say that as far as i know, you have to be 4 or 5 - (4 if you are nearly 5) .. to start in the summer term in august. the trick is to leave school when you are 16 so if you take out the 7 primary classes and 4 high classes - 11 years - 16 = 5Never do things tomorow when you can do them today.0

Private schools take them from 2 and a half ! My DD was born in August 02 and is starting school in September - you cant usually start school until the term you are 4. Perhaps the child is actually going to go to the preschool attached to the school - one year preschool and one year reception = the 2 years. That what my little one has just done. Roll on September!I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes0

My town only does 1 intake of reception children in September. If a childs birthday was 31/8/02 they would be starting full-time school in Sept. Born on or after this date upto and including 31/8/03 would mean them starting in Sept 07. This is in England, I believe Scotland uses different birth dates for their school years.
Is it not a nursery attached to the school the child will be attending? My daughter starts school nursery in Sept. She was born March 03.0 -
My neice was born april 02, starts school Sept coming, while dd was born 6 months later in oct 02, but wont start school til sept 07. My Daughter did this, she is 7 now and seems very happy....apart from an addiction to online bingo...hmmmmmm, but she does learn/speak quite good French (taught by a very nice French lady at the school), which saves me shouting at people when we holiday in Bourdeaux, I just say :hello: , and she then takes care of the complicated bits like which bloody table we can sit at and how I want my steak cooked, I just scowl at the waiters.0 -
My son was born on 21/08/03 and will be starting school in Sept 07, when he will be 4 and two weeks old. He's eligible for his nursery grant from this Sept. but there aren't any nurseries attached to schools where I live. This is in England.0

They changed our school. Instead of seperate nursery and reception classes, it's all called "Foundation Stage" and children aged 3-5 spend 2 years here before moving into Year 1. The nursery children have to wear uniform, and are more involved in day to day school stuff. The children are seperated by ability for learning, but all come together for learn through play, and general play sessions.
Another Mam told me it's so bright 3 year olds spend more time doing reception age work, to keep them interested, but slower learners can spend 2 years at nursery pace to learn the basics. She said they are much better prepared to start more formal lessons at age 5-6 when they go into Year 1.Here I go again on my own....0 -
My DD was born on 25/02/2003. She starts school next September. She will be 4 1/2.
Just have to find out which school to apply to! Great fun! "Never save something for a special occasion. Every day in your life is a special occasion". _party_0 -

Scrap what I said - you mean she starts the following September not Next September! The best things in life are NOT free - but they sure are cheaper with MSE!:j0
