orange contract sim wont work in nokia 5800 after 11 months

hi all I really need some advice .
last night my wife accidently removed her orange contract sim from her 11 month old nokia 5800 express music instead of the mini sd memory card she re inserted and switched device back on but now the phone wont read contacts saved to sim and when she tries to make or recieves calls the conversation disconnects after 16 seconds with connection error message .we have tried payg sims from our kids phones and they all work fine .
today we visited the orange shop in cardiff and they had never seen this so they contacted orange for us to be told we will have to pay £70 for phone to be repaired and take out insurance aswell this sounds really dumb to me when the phone works perfecly fine with other sim cards in ,surely they are in some sort of breach of contract she pays £30 pm for services that she cannot use now because they wont change sim and are saying faulty phone which is not at fault the sim is !!!!!!!!!! please help

Did you show the Orange store the phone working with the payg sim?
I can't see why they'd think the phone was faulty if they can see it working with another sim ??
Also you could get the store to put the sim in one of their phone that they know works and prove the point that way.
They 'should' just issue you with a new sim if the old one's not working. What happened to it after it was taken out ? As a rule they're quite hard to break !

The sim cards are actually quite fragile, I'd recommend phoning Orange and explaining the situation, if another sim works in the phone then that rules out the phone
