Care tyres

Hello all,

How much have people paid to to have their tracking done on their car?

I have just pair 162 pound for having 4 new budget tyres + tracking on my N reg ford fiesta.

Have I paid over the odds ?

This is what I did, I scowered the internet for my local tyre companies and found 4, National tyres, chessington tyres (now kwick fit) PTS tyres and F1 tyres.

These are the following quotes:

National tyres: Repair 1(with puncture) 20 new 1 off tyre 42 new set of four 150
kwick fit Repair 1(with puncture) 18.50 new 1 off tyre 34 new set of four 169.95
PTS Tyres Repair 1(with puncture) N/A new 1 off tyre 37.60 new set of four 150
F1 tyres Repair 1(with puncture) 18.89 new 1 off tyre 42.22 new set of four 168.87

I went with Kwick fit, because they had the cheapest repair and replacement and they said they would assess whether or not I needed a complete set and the guy sounded pretty helpful. If they didnt match the 150 for the complete set then I would have gone down the road to National tyres.

When I got there he measured the tred and some were about 1 mil close to the limit, so I said if you will do a complete set for 140 ill do it. At this point I thought it wouild be a good deal, they obliged, then they said they would do a free tracking. the tracking was out which I witnessed for myself and they sorted that for me. for an additional 27.95 Total 167.95 (close to their original tyre quote).

I haggled down to 162.95. Is 27.95 your average tracking price, or were they trying to make up the difference for the tyres ?
Thanks
Brett

  • I pay over £100 to have my vehicle fully laser-aligned on the Hunter DSP 600 imaging system.

That involves castor, camber, toe, steer-in, and thrust angle.

A quickie alignment will go some way toward sorting things out, but only when things are done properly, with bushings and suspension points in good condition, will you get even tyre wear.

My vehicle wears the tyres absolutely equally along all axis because of the above alignments.

Seems a reasonable price, and not many cars have adjustment on castor, camber, or rear suspension geometry, so it's worth doing a normal tracking on a road car, and four wheel tracking is sometimes better than two, but anything else involves dismantling and shimming, so it's not worth it.
It all changes when you load the car up as well, so unless you always have 1 person and no luggage, it'll be wrong, (and I'm assuming you stay in the car when it's fully laser aligned. If you get out it's wrong anyway)
I get even tyre wear on mine, and I do it myself with a piece of wood.

My experience with Kwikfit wasn't that great. Their price guarantee is farce. And their front office technical staffs are nothing but glorified salesmen trained to do pressure selling.

While I was away, missus had a flat tyre and took the car to the KF garage and they did this so called "pressure selling" by using a popular term used in the motor trade called "barely legal". When a tyre is barely legal and not-barely legal - ask them to write it down, they will struggle. My car has done its MOT 2 weeks and done only 50 odd miles after that still it was barely legal to the Kwikfit guys.
