Company in liquidation chasing me for money, where do I stand?

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but here goes.
Had some building work done 2008, there have been a lot of problems with it but we paid anyway. Builder finished as much as he was ever going to do September 2008, we then received a final invoice with 'trumped up' charges for almost £10,000. We wrote back straight away, asking for clarification, and outlining the work he still had not finished. He never wrote back. Then in January 2009 we wrote to him again, as he had failed to do something pretty serious that resulted in us having to contact the council to check if our building reg certifcate was in jeopardy. He never replied to that either, we heard that his company went into liquidation shortly after.
Fastforward a few weeks ago, we get a letter from a solicitor stating his company had gone into liquidation and that we owed almost £10,000. We replied, giving a full picture of what has happened, that the work is incomplete and we are actually paying quite a lot to have it put right.
They are now wanting, photograpic evidence and for us to pay for a quantity surveyor, which we are refusing to do, it's simply too expensive, and to be honest I don't feel we should be having to.
My question is, where do we stand legally? Any advice gratefully received,

Hi there not sure 100 percent but it may be solicitors for his estate trying to recover what is owed.
Obviously you are unhappy with works but still owe some amount for the works, hence they want a survey so a value can be put on the debt.
You say they want 10k, how much do you think you owe?

You would stand in exactly the same position as if the firm had not gone into liquidation, just the money is owed to someone else, im afraid i cannot be more helpfull than that, as the quetion needs to be answered by someone with expertise in building contractsHi, im Debtinfo, i am an ex insolvency examiner and over the years have personally dealt with thousands of bankruptcy cases.
Please note that any views i put forth are not those of my former employer The Insolvency Service and do not constitute professional advice, you should always seek professional advice before entering insolvency proceedings.0 -
I would take the photos as evidence anyway.
