PPI still taken from account years after card cancelled

Hi, My mam recently realised something which has been coming out of her bank account is not what she thought it was but is PPI for a credit card she owned around 5 years ago, she rang up to cancel it to be told that they dont stop the cover until told to do so by the customer. is this right or should she be eligible for a refund? the card was with HSBC but the PPI was with HBOS.

Thanks, Davesafc

    Hi there

Your mam should be able to cancel this anytime, and personally I would write to cancel, ask that they do this immediately.

If your mam was mis sold the PPI, then she has the right to make a reclaim on all she have paid on the PPI, interest, plus 8% interest of what a court would award for being deprived of her money.

So for whatever reasons your mam has, write to them with the reasons, and they have 8 weeks in full to respond, post by recorded delivery for proof of posting.

The link above is helpful with the guidelines of reclaiming, if they try fobbing off such as "you must have been aware of the PPI as you signed the agreement" then do not worry, this is standard, and write back again, stand your ground until the final decision is given, which should also enclose details of the financial ombudsman sevice (FOS).
They let you know if its the final decision.

So with guidance from the above link, you will find template letters, these can be used for any type of reclaiming, do not worry about writing the amounts, as they should supply the breakdown if successful - or you can request they send them to your mum.
Write all reasons that may apply to your mam, worth checking on the checklist of the above link of these.

Good luck, ask for further help if required, and please let us know how your mum gets on, cheers.;)

Are you sure it's PPI and not Card Care?

PPI is based on the balance of the card so you can't be charged it on a nil balance.

Card care is a yearly (sometimes 3 yearly) payment of around £30 - £50 which will be charged until you tell the insurer to cancel it.

Am not sure why it is coming out the bank perhaps it is as Melorablack has said Cardcare rather than just PPI. Ring and ask. Also they will argue it was up to you to cancel when the card was finished.

Thanks for the reply's. I think it must of been some sort of card care as she said it was £8 per month debited from her account which she thought was cover for a domestic appliance but turned out to be for her credit card, she rang up this morning and did cancel it as she hadn't had the card for 5 year (they still tried to get her to upgrade the policy for one costing £9 per month) they did cancel but told her they hadn't stopped it because she hadn't told them too even though she no longer had the card. I just wanted to check if she had any way of claiming the money back?
  • £8 per month for card care - ouch, if she remembers canceling it then she should be able to get a refund

  • Hello,

    Looking for advice please..

After being made redundant in 2006 it was necessary for me to claim on my PPI cover, when this expired The overall debt was placed with the Consumer credit Councelling service in a managed repayment plan.

I have since discovered that my debt has hardly reduced due to the fact that the credit company have continued to take PPI's based on the amount outstanding!.

The cards and loan were cancelled over 5 years ago, do you think I have a claim at all?

    Many thanks.

If you paid ppi and have valid reasons for mis sell then put a claim in.

    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/ppi-loan-insurance#step2

If you win mis sell then the amount you claimed when off work will be taken off this.
You need to get this ppi cancelled on the cards even when you put a mis sell claim in,do not cancel the loan ppi, wait for a response to your mis sell.
