Nationwide card- worth keeping?

I've just finished my annual shuffle and as a result, I have the following cards-

Nationwide Gold Card- Balance £0/ Limit £2000
MBNA Platinum- £0/ £3300
Halifax (new)- £0/ £1950
Santander Zero (new)- £1200/ £2500

I took out the Halifax one for 12 month interest free on purchases and the Santander Zero to transfer balances from my old Nationwide and MBNA cards. I'd like to keep the MBNA card as they do seem to do a lot of offers, which might be useful in the future. I was wondering whether it was worthwhile keeping the Nationwide card though. Do they do repeat offers or anything similar, or can anyone point any other benefits to keeping it open?

I keep mine for the extended warranties on electrical items. To be fair though, others now provide this benefit as well and I've never actually had to make a claim, so I don't know how good it is.

Nationwide offer free exchange in Europe.
They pass on the 1% VISA fee outside Europe but that's still cheap.

I would keep it for holidays unless any of your other cards offer currency free exchange or unless you never go abraod.

I agree. I just cancelled mine actually because I have Nationwide d/card and don't plan going anywhere until next year anyway.

Surprisingly, they didn't ask a single question, just cancelled it immediately!! That was the most hassle free close up I've ever done!

The OP's Zero card will be better than Nationwide outside Europe, 0% instead of 1%. Of course this only applies after the end of any BT deals as mixing and purchases and a BT is a no-no.
  • OK, thanks everyone. I'm not planning any holidays this year, and as cattychappy says, the Zero card is better for that, so I think I'll just go ahead and cancel it.

dont forget though its always best to have a spare card for holidays incase the main one doesnt work. so if the zero card gets declined/lost etc you would have to use one of the other expensive cards.

also do you intend to use zero after you have cleared it as they charge a dormancy fee, so if you clear the balence and then only keep it for foreign holidays you may get a charge, whereas at least nationwide doesnt charge this (yet)
