Credit fraud - any ideas?

After many years of safely shopping on line, some one has used our credit card. The card has been cancelled and we have to wait until Monday to talk to the fraud department. My query is that we have not been a victim of what I would consider 'normal' credit card fraud and part of me is wondering if the shop made a massive mistake rather than fraud. (by normal fraud I think one low value attempt to see if it will work then a massive hammering of high value goods over a very short time until the card maxes out)

Yesterday we received an invoice through the post from an online shop. The address and my husbands name was correct and the item had been posted to a man with the same name as my husband at a business in another city. (The business does not seem to exist however - not on companies house anyway or streetview!) On recieving the invoice OH called up the shop and said I think you have made a mistake and sent it to the wrong person as we have never shopped with you. They then said the item had been bought with a M&S credit card and gave the last 4 digits of our card and told us to take our complaint to the bank as it was nothing to do with them.

Called up bank and yes the £170 transaction was there from a week and a half ago. (we don't use this card - just there for emergencies!) That is what confuses me the person paid for a very expensive next day delivery so they must have know the card was working - so why stop there if it was fraud and not a fault by the shop?

The shops website is terrible for online transaction - no signature strip details needed just the card number, start date and person name needed and the verified by master card screen does not seem to be working with them - amusingly they are part of the 'Internet Shopping is Safe ' scheme!

What is most annoying is when we last tried to use that credit card online we got blocked by card issuer!!!

Just gutted we have been stung! Who do you think is at fault - fraud or the shop (who we have never used!)?

  • Hi

Sorry to hear of your problem ,
Yes , it is strange if the card is not used , how whoever
used it at this store , came into possesion of the card details ?

I am going through a strange fraud case with EGG , where they think
someone hacked my pc to gain info on my egg account , when i very rarely
use the pc with my bank info on etc .

I think in both cases it may be a leak at the Banks end ( although they will never admit it )

hope it all gets sorted out satisfactorily for you

    Kind regards
    Rich

We are also having a similar issue with our Lloyds TSB Mastercard. Only in our case I'm more for blaming the problem at the banks end seeing as it's funny the cc was the the same week as the debit card. Again our credit card was not used for several months yet it still happened to us.

I'd also bet the banks wont admit problems there end with security. But by the sounds of it there seems to be a number of such cases coming through where there is no easy way to explain whats happened yet it seems like it has to a few of us on here now.

  • well i would agree , however the PC uses FreeSpire ( linux )
and to install anything is a right old rigmarole ! ( having to make any new software executionable and giving it permissions , user , superuser , or even root )

so i don't know , as i stated i think someone maybe skimming details in the back office
    or just a glitch perhaps

  • I used to work in a credit card fraud department and fraud is actually quite rare and most of what we investigated turned out to be mistakes (some by the retailer and some by the cardholder), a confusion over the name of the retailer compared to the name used on the statment and a lot of it was done by family members (without the cardholder knowing).

A lot of our time was wasted as not much actual fraud ever seemed to take place and when we did come across something that was 100% fraud, the company were always reluctant to press charges as it made them look bad. They would try and make the customer liable if they could.

All anyone can do in this situation is report it, wait for the forms to arrive and go from there. In the meantime the credit card company will be asking the retailer to provide details of the transaction to try and see what's what.
