Out of the frying pan and in to the fire ? BT v Sky

Our BT broadband contract is up on 29 April (apparantly).

OH has mentioned that we could save money by changing to Sky.

I know nothing about Sky and how to change over but do know that I need to keep my btinternet.com email address (but have been told that my emails will still be ok to use even though i wouldnt be with bt anymore)

Pros and cons of Sky v BT (or any of them to be honest)

OH is an online gamer, movies, downloads etc
Me - bog standard emails, forums, facebook etc

Currently on BT broadband, option 3

Are you on a Sky LLU exchange? Otherwise you will be put on the Sky Connect service, which is dire. Check your other LLU options
    www.samknows.com, then exchange search.
Bear in mind that once your line is LLU'd to Sky you would then have to bring your line rental back to BT on a 12m contract if you wanted to leave Sky. And you can only get Sky broadband while you are a Sky subscriber.

It was assumed that you already have Sky subscription TV services? You can't have Sky phone or broadband services without Sky TV.
It makes no sense to take out Sky TV just to get their other services?

Right, that'll be the male in him talking then and not thinking things through properly. Typical, lol. It's this sort of situation that ends up costing us more money in the long run.

Just been on the Sky website and went through their packages page

£20pm = Sky TV with Entertainment packs (variety, music, news and events)
FREE = Sky + box, £30 one off setup fee
    £11pm = Sky Talk rental
£10pm = Broadband unlimited (top broadband package)
    FREE = Talk Freetime

Total = £41 per month with a £30 setup fee.

Doesn't seem too bad but guess I'm missing something somewhere ? BT wanted me to up the direct debit to them, up to £49-50.

If you actually want Sky subscription TV, then it's worth considering taking their broadband and phone services too. But otherwise look at your other LLU options, as there are much better phone and broadband options than Sky.

Sounds like you are on the wrong BT tariff for your usage-and if you are not paying by monthly whole bill DD then you are paying through the nose anyway.

I suggest you investigate whether you can keep your BT internet email address if you change ISP.
In most cases you would still be able to receive emails from your old address but not send them.
You would be better off getting a free net mail account like Google mail that is free and independent of your ISP.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

What about Virgin Media? We have just cancelled our Sky and switched to them. I have always found them to be good, and their customer services beats Sky's hands down!

BTW I don't work for them before someone suggests it!
