The bank has lost my money and don't seem to care

Reading this thread I am sure that NatWest will wipe out all the fees if you can keep your cool and explain the situation calmly and clearly to the right person. I used to work for HSBC ages ago and mistakes do happen, and can be rectified quickly.
Don't try to explain it at the till, if you have a branch phone number (like gold dust I know but they do exist....) then telephone first to make an appointment 'to discuss my Bank Charges caused by a Bank error'.
Then take in your evidence (from HSBC too if you have it), including your previous NW statements showing the regular payment in previous months. Show what you have discovered about the money being in a holding account, point out that the dates tally with when your a/c went OD.
I expect the Manager (or his/her appointed minion, as I used to be) will see that you are a very longstanding customer who has had hassle for no fault of your own. I would also take along a written list of all your phone calls and visits, petrol/bus fares etc. you have coughed up to sort this mess out, as I feel they should compensate you for your out-of-pocket expenses too.
I recently had a legitimate complaint against a Credit Card company. I wrote a letter which also mentioned my 2 phone calls as well as the cost of the letter. When they refunded the charge I had complained about they also credited £5 for phone calls on top.
Good luck, keep calm and let us know how they sort it out for you!

Good luck with this, I certainly hope you win.
I have banked with NatWest for over 30 years and I find they are getting worse and worse. They are simply out to screw customers for every last farthing.
I find it UNBELIEVABLE that they can charge you £190 for an error which was clearly not yours, but then I have had a similar thing.
So once again, Good Luck.
