The bank has lost my money and don't seem to care

I bank with the RNW and my ex with the HSBC.

Every month he pays a lump sum by standing order from his account into mine, last month was no exception, but between the 2 banks they have "mislaid" the money. It has left his account, but not arrived in mine. Neither bank is being very helpful about the problem.

RNW basically said everyones excuse for being over-drawn is because their money has not got in, it was the oldest trick in the book, maybe it is, but for me it is genuine.

RNW have said they can't trace it HSBC has said they won't trace it as they know they have not made an error. Meanwhile, I am over my over draft limit and no one seems to care apart from me.

Any suggestions about what I can do apart from swear !!

  • 1st thing - which bank is RNW? - if its set up on the BACS system as a regular monthly payment then no manual intervention is required unless the details are incorrect, so assuming the sort code & account number are perfect the money will go straight in, if only one of the digits are incorrect then if the receiving bank can trace the correct details then its applied manually, if not then they return it to the sending bank 'unable to apply' & its recredited to the senders account

If you regularly recieve this money then surely your bank can see this from your statements? I don't think it is fair to accuse you of tricks. Has your ex got the money back in his account yet? If he has, could he give you cash this month, which you could pay straight in.

i had a similar problem a few years back, my wages didnt get paid in........ (i had been working for the same company for 11 years.....) all of a sudden on month it didnt get paid in.

it turns out, that someone dealing with any rejected credits was, spotting my credit, correcting the account number (2 digits swapped) and crediting the account, because the person had now left the bank, my wages didnt get credited...... the bank never told me, the firm i worked for had entered the details wrong..... for 11 years i had been lucky.

I would suggest that your OH pay his bank a personal visit...... as the money will be somewhere...... he will need to check the account details he is trying to send the payment to....

    good luck

thats madness that a bank would rely on a manual procedure to do something like that and that it was down to 'Bill' whether hundreds of people get their money. such stupidity amongst these IT systems.

Also like to know which bank is RNW??? The money is not lost. Sorry to sound contraversial, but are you 100% sure that your ex did send you the money? Could he have cancelled or suspended the standing order? If he did send the money, then it must be somewhere. It will bounce back if an incorrect number has been entered within a few days. If it doesn't then ask RNW to do a BACS recall on the money. They may charge for this though.

Sorry, RNW is Nat West, being a Mystery Shopper this is the abbrieviated term for it, I forget when I am not working at times !!.

The money has now turned up, Nat West had it in a "holding account", why, I shall never know and it lookes like I will not be told either. The member of staff told me money goes into a holding account if someone thinks it is destined for the wrong account. I have incurred £100 of fees which I have made quite clear I am not paying and will close my account if I have to to prevent these charges being taken out. They had the money all the time and to deprive me of it, I find quite appauling.

  • like I said earlier , with BACS no manual intervention unless the incorrect details have been quoted - stick to your guns about the fees, even though for whatever reason it wasn't applied to your account because of the HSBC info it was still on Natwest books as it were

As the previous post ..there is no 'someone'! The transfer is automated from account to account via the BACS system.

It only went into suspense because something went wrong at the Nat West end (remote possibility HSBC corrupted the account number - but no reason for them to change it?). Nat West should apply the credit to your account retrospectively (i.e. with the date into their system) - and that should automatically remove the charges.

I have got my bank statement this morning and mad is not the word, NatWest have stung me with £190 of bank charges

How on earth can they justify that ??

I was charged £40 for going over my overdraft limit and £90 for being over drawn for 3 days (£30 per day) they also tacked on an additional £60 charge which apparently was owed from June.

I have been with this bank for 28 years and unless they sort this mess out, the "relationship" will end this month. I can't do anything today as I have a day out planned with the kids, but my local branch is going to think a tornado has hit them tomorrow.

They had my money all along, I have seen proof from the HSBC, so they keep my money, but don't let me have it, then charge me for the honour, something is very seriously wrong.

I would appreciate any help you can offer, as I wouldlike to say the right things straight away rather than muddle through in anger !!

Show Natwest the proof from HSBC. Regardless of who made the error Natwest had the money and did not apply it to your account. It was their decision to hold the money in suspense, if they did not know it was yours they could have sent it back to HSBC and trf could have been done again correctly. If they will not refund charges, ask to see Manager. If you need to, kick up a fuss. Do not hesitate to tell them that you will go to Ombudsman however you have to go down the Natwest complaints route first. I would be very surprised if faced with this they did not wipe these off as 1) cost to Natwest for Ombudsman to take on case is around twice the figure you are disputing with them 2) bank charges very much in limelight at moment.

Have a nice day with kids and good luck for Operation Wipe Out Charges!
