Well if it's a payment of discretion, I wouldn't be surprised. The three weeks he went in there, he had oodles of evidence of jobs applied for, interviews etc. - he had comments made on his commitment to find employment each time - and had very positive comments from the staff member when he went in to sign off. Thanks for the info :)

Good for him, I hope that it all works out for him
  • It's not the advisors whom your son would have seen who pay out the Job Grant but the Benefits Delivery Centre when they close down the claim. Job Grants for 18-24 year olds used to have to be actioned clerically (don't know if it is like that now) so maybe an error was made that way. There are certain circumstances in which DWP can recover any overpayment even if it is a DWP error (for example if you go on a course via JCP, you sign a form to say that any overpayment is recoverable) but in some cases, they will ask for the money back if it is their error but cannot insist you pay it back.

Thanks for that info.....I've mentioned it to him, and he wants to phone them tomorrow to make sure he was entitled to it. Considering he's just an average 20 yr old boy, I'm quite proud of his honesty - especially considering his first pay isn't till next week!
  • No, he wasn't entitled to the Job Grant, as it is only for those in receipt of a qualifying benefit and who have been claiming for 26 weeks continuously, without any breaks at all (you cannot be claiming for National Insurance credits only). It was obviously a DWP error though, so I wouldn't worry.

Interesting. I've just been told I'm eligible for it, having had 26 weeks claiming contribution-based JSA and then approx 30 weeks signing on for NI credits only. Perhaps the rules have changed?

There is no legal right to a job grant, the refusal of one is non-appealable, it is entirely at the discretion of the SoS*.

According to direct.gov.uk, it's not true. "You'll automatically get Job Grant so long as you're eligible."
