Hi, can anyone answer my question?
My son left school a year age and was in full time employment.Child Benifit stopped.
This year when my son will be 17 in August is going back into full time education, would I be able to claim child benifit for this parent dependant child? My elder daughter ,I claimed until her 19th birthday(uni student) but she did not have a break and go to work.

Thank you.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
Spring begins on 21st March.

Child Benefit can't be re-instated after the extension period if he left for full-time employment.

However, if you earn the correct amount, Child Tax Credits can usually be re-paid if you get someone nice on the phone who nudges you into saying that he had private tutors during the time he was working.

He will also be able to claim EMA if your household income is under £30k

Have you got any links with that info?

If you are on Child Benefit the child can't work over 24 hours per week as I understand it, therefore if he was in full time employment over 24 hrs/week it wouldn't matter whether or not he had private tutors.

Saying this was the case in order to obtain benefits is fraud in any case!

I may have this wrong (and I'm sure someone will let me know if I have) but I don't think you should have claimed for your daughter. You can claim until the age of 19 if the child is in Further Education, but not Higher Education...

That is my understanding as well. You can only claim until the September after they finish A levels, providing they are going on to further education, but this does include up to the 19th birthday if they have re-taken a year.

It changed in April this year, it can be claimed up until the 20th birthday if the child's 19th birthday is after 7th April 2006.

But yes, it is Further Education only, not Higher Education

    Which part of the info?

I don't mean during the time the young person is working, but sometimes they will re-instate it if they return to education. Not sure if it's written but several of our clients have been coxed into saying this by the Tax Credits staff.

Thank you for all your replies-so helpful...
I guess I cannot claim child benifit for my son then. I have just sent off the forms to claim EMI.
As for daughter, she left school just before her 17th birthday and did 2yrs at a 6th form collage-bringing her upto 19yrs. Then went to uni...has done 2yrs so far and has another year to go.
    Best Wishes...
