Barclay Card Rage

Well I am fuming with them, after using my card and clearing the majority of my balance at the end of each month recently they have whacked a default on my account for going £16 over my limit. I did this by using my card in a pay at pump petrol station. I then called customer services who immidiately refunded the £12 charge but refused to remove the default. The guy claimed that they legally had to register the default as it was my fault. I said that was !!!!!!!!, which it is and it was their information and they could do what they wanted with it.

Anyway, there was no late payments, no missed payments just a blip going over the limit by £16, at the start of the month I had my whole balance available and again I have cleared the balance. I have just finished writing a letter to their complaints office asking for the default to be removed or I am closing all of my barclays related accounts.

Am I being unreasonable asking for this, are barclaycard showing a complete lack of common sense? I think so:mad:

I guess it's entirely your fault for going over the limit so they didn't even have to refund the £12.

    Define default?
  • Another good reason not to use pay at pump. The pumps always reserve a maximum on each car to cover the "average" cost of filling a tank plus X%. I wouldn't use them because of this reason.

Are you sure its a default and not just a late payment ? Doesn't seem to make sense if you paid as outlined.

I am not sure what default means to the bank but that is what they have put on my statment, that I have received a default. However I thought a default was a missed or late payment, I didn't think that going over your limit would do this unless you failed to bring it back within its limit by the next statment.

And willham, yes I know it's my fault, but given the circumstances did I deserve a default notice on my credit file, and just for the record I never asked for the £12 back they did it off their own back, I was interested in the default notice.

It was described on my statement as a default.

They won't default you for going over your credit limit? Hell, at the height of my own financial disaster zone I was over-limit with Egg for nearly 2 years (but still making the minimum payments) and still had all green 0's on my credit report.

Being over your limit isn't a default, as far as I am aware, providing you keep paying.

You may be "in default" of your agreement (by going over the limit), but it shouldn't be reported to the CRA's as such. The only way to know for sure is to register (for free, via QuidCo) and check though.

So just a late payment then, annoying but not the end of the world.

You did go over your limit - did you not realise you were close to the card limit ?

What you got was a Default Charge for a minor infraction of the terms of the account. This is in no way shape or form comparable to a Default Notice.

£12 for overlimit, late payment, or bounced payment. Standard fare across all cards.

Doesn't affect your credit rating outside Barclaycard but will mean you can't ask for a credit limit increase form them for six months.

You did it, they charged you, it's all laid out in the Credit Agreement you agreed to be tied to.

They haven't done anything wrong, there's nothing to worry about, just take the £12 charge on the chin, accept responsibility, lesson learned, move on.

I never made a lete payment, in fact I made 2 payments in that period. Yes I realised I was near my limit but my other card didn't work in the machine.
