  • Yes, check everything works on the dashboard, and that all seats move freely, etc. Check all tyres and tread depths, including the spare. Check the toolkit is there, and jack. Check you have two keys, not just one.

If it's raining when you pick it up, make sure there are no chips in the windscreen. It was raining when we picked up our car last month and we never noticed until the rain stopped. The garage has had it fixed though.

As its a pretty new motor and you are buying from a main dealer you will receive a warranty anyway. Good luck and enjoy your new car :)

Its been a while since I had to check a second-hand car so these tests might be well out of date but its what my dad taught me to check.

Check round the engine compartment for fresh oil.
Put the car into third gear and with the handbrake on try to pull away, the engine should stall if the brake is ok.
If possible grab each wheel at the top and give it a good shake (in & out) if it shakes the whole car its ok if there is only movement of the wheel or a 'clunk' is heard it could be the bearings.
Check the door sills for 'crumple' marks, car may have had a shunt.
Using a cloth for protection block the end of the exhaust with engine ticking over, this should cause the engine revs to drop meaning the exhaust system has no holes in it.
Check wear on the pedals and drivers seat for excessive wear, this might be an indication that the car has done more miles than the clock says.

Thats all I remember at the moment.

i have another question please...the car has got 8 months manuf. warranty left on it but the garage I am buying it from (ford dealer) says that they will not offer any cover after that!! actually even during the first 8 months if there is any problem toyota should sort it out so the ford dealer selling me the car is not providing any cover!!! i was always under the impression that such car should come with 12 months cover when you buy it from a dealer...any advice please?

That would be part of the buying negotiation, it's a bit late if they havn't agreed to that before signing up.

Any warranty on a used car is subject to agreement on both parties, buyer and seller.

There is no legal obligation to be covered under a warranty. The consumer protection such as SOGA will apply though.

The warranty with Toyota is pretty solid though

Has it had any works necessary under the recall?

Although i have not seen the service book yet i was assured that the car has been serviced as per schedule and it will be serviced before i collect it. I dont think the toyota recall applied to the verso model
