Own my house but pay council tax and housing association charges - Help please

  • Not all HAs have got their act together on issues like this.

I acted once for a client who bought a house where there was a shared forecourt area with some planted bits which were maintained by the HA and they charged a small service charge of around £30 per year for this.

I asked for details of how this charge was made up as in this case even this small charge did not make a lot of sense. They eventually provided me with a breakdown that was actually for a nearby block of flats and included items like lift maintenance!

As a retired conveyancing solicitor I believe the information given in the post to be useful assuming any properties concerned are in England/Wales but I accept no liability for it.
  • No we don't have a residents association or anthing like that. I know the neighbours aren't happy but they feel like I do that we have signed a contract and what can we do. I have written to them under the freedom of information act asking for copies of all invoices for electricity, street light repairs, grass cutting charges etc and a detailed breakdown of how this is charged as most of the houses are rented and only a few are privately owned. There is also a clause in my deeds/contract that states they have to provide all financial copies on request as we are paying for it - just incase they tell me they don't have to respond to FOI requests.

I have also sent a request to the council asking them to state which lights they maintain and if they pay electricity for them so that I have all the information.
