Disablement Benifit!

i have a friend of 20 years old who had a stroke a week before her baby was born!
which has left her with short term memory loss and she has just been registerd partially blind and by this i mean she can only see out of the inside corner of her right eye the left one she is completely blind.

she has just told me that she is not eligible for Disablement benifit as she doesnt require care and she can walk places on her own amongst other stuff.

surley this cant be right she has to tilt her head to see people's full face!!!!

ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREAT !!!!!!

(baby boy is fine and all is well !!!!):j

if by disablement benefit you mean DLA then if she has no extra care of mobility needs she will not be eintitled to it, DLA is awarded based on that not the disability.

If she is unable to work, depending on if she has a partner etc then she may be able to apply for ESA

The RNIB site has good information on benefits for those with sight problems, including how to approach a claim (a list of things to consider when making it) and how to appeal, how to apply for ESA and so on.

    http://www.rnib.org.uk/livingwithsightloss/yourmoney/benefits/Pages/dla.aspx

There are disability advice charities out there that can help with a claim and the appeal. Perhaps the RNIB or another poster on this forum can suggest one.

This organisation, and others dedicated to those with sight issues, will be able to advise her on aids and other support, not just benefits.

What are her specific care and mobility needs? This are the kinds of things she needs to demonstrate for care

What is 'help with personal care'?

    This may include:
    • bathing and washing
    • choosing clothes
    • dressing
    • cutting up food
    • taking medication
    • getting around indoors and outdoors
    • reading personal mail
    • recognising people and finding items
    • or help with speaking and listening.
Personal care can also include help you need with social activities, leisure pursuits, or while working or studying. The help you need with seeing to do all these personal and other activities is relevant for the care component.

    Mobility

..if you have a very severe sight loss you are likely to only qualify for the lower rate.
    Lower Rate Mobility Component

The lower rate is for people who need some help with getting around outdoors. If you are able to walk but need someone with you to make sure you are safe in unfamiliar places or to help you find your way around in unfamiliar places, you are likely to qualify.

If you need care or have mobility problems then you qualify, having a problem does not neccessarily mean you will get it.

You would have to have had the condition for 3 months before you can claim.

it's needs and not the condition. They should also be expected to last for another 6 months.

I have to do this too (different condition) but get DLA mobility because of safety issues. (can't cross roads without supervision)
