If I Start To Receive A Rental Income, Can I Still Claim Job Seekers Allowance?

Hello all.
I am a home-owner and am now also on Contribution-Based Job Seekers Allowance (£65/wk).
If I was to rent out one of my rooms (for approx £120) do I lose JSA and Council Tax Benefit entitlement?
Or am I entitled to a certain amount per week before losing it all.
All advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Are you claiming contributions based JSA or means tested?

    It's Contribution Based.

Any income must be declared to Jobseeker's Allowance. This will have an effect on the amount of benefit you are entitled to.

If the income is not declared, then I am not sure if Jobseeker's Allowance would find out. It's your call on that bit.

    Hope that helps.
  • However, Contributions-based Jobseekers' Allowance is not means-tested so this income will not affect it.

Bear in mind that C-B JSA only lasts six months. Income-based JSA IS means-tested and therefore the rental for the room will be classed as income and your JSA adjusted accordingly.

    7DAYWEEKEND. I disagree.
Whilst Contributory based JSA is not means tested. A regular income will affect the amount of benefit. Infact any income MAY have an affect on benefit.

No a pension of over £50 per week would affect contribution based JSA.

Rental income will not affect contribution based JSA in this case.

That's if you're working for money or receiving a pension.

As already stated the rental income will not have an effect on your Contibutions based Job Seekers Allowance. It will however have an effect on your Council Tax Benefit as depending on what sort of arrangement you have with your 'tenant/lodger' a proportion of the £120 will be taken into account as income,

If you rent out a room will this include meals?
