The fact of the matter is your credit card account is in credit. That is your money and you are allowed to ask for it

When my credit card was in credit last year the balance showed as a minus. If it was in debt there would be no sign before the number.

  • I hope this won't be too verbose - so here goes.

I pay all of my bills via direct debit. My Barclaycard is normally taken off between say 5 and 8th of the month. I was close to my overdraft limit in February and, the first I knew about a problem was when I received a letter from my bank telling me that they could not release funds to pay the February Barclaycard - which would have been collected by them on 5th February.

I then rang Barclaycard who told me that I should manually pay £241 - which is my minimum payment, wait two or three days as sometimes the direct debit is cancelled. I cannot recall if they said they would cancel this automatically or, if it is my bank who automatically cancel it. A couple of days later, after I had paid the amount, I was called from Delhi and told that I was in arrears of that amount plus the amount for March. I could not have been in arrears for the March payment since It was not due until 6th March. The woman in Delhi asked me to pay £400 and I refused saying that I would only pay what they had not received for February, pointing out that this had indeed been done two days ago. She informed me that my direct debit had not been cancelled.

Now we come to this week, I had assumed that my B/Card direct debit (having been told it was not cancelled) would be paid as normal as there were sufficient funds in my current account to cover it and, the other debits. When I say sufficient funds I was still well within my overdraft limit.

The woman who spoke to me from Delhi I felt was very bullying, so did my partner as he was listening on another phone. She asked me to pay the same amount just over £400 to include the April payment - but we are not in April, so again I refused telling them that I would go to the bank tomorrow to pay this month's payment of £242.00.

I have since arranged thru B/Card to set up my direct debit again, which they assured me has been done, but that it may not be set up in time for the April payment which I will have to pay manually on or before 12th April.

I am telling everyone this to find out if anyone else has had a similar experience. I feel as if I'm being bullied or perhaps they have targets to meet, do they have a right to ask me for the April payment although we are still in March.

I'm quite upset and worried by it all. There is nothing I can do about my overdraft unfortunately, except try to stay within it. I have a lot of direct debits each month and don't want any more bounced back at me - it's embarrassing and very worrying for me.

    Please advise.
