Dear All
I am with Toynbee Housing Association and I wish to terminate my tenancy agreement due to circumstances beyond my control.I spoke to my landlords Toynbee and stated that I wished to give 2 weeks notice to vacate the property.
Then then promptly advised me that by law I must give them 4 weeks notice as stated in my tenancy agreement. Can they legally force me to pay my for 4 weeks and hold me to this?
I wanted to know when they say 'law' is it law in the sense such as the banks scare tactics with overdrafts and is there anyway around this?
Thanks in advance for any advice offered.
Kind regards,
Michael

If you are on a periodic tenancy (month by month - not a fixed term) and you pay rent weekly, then you have to give 4 weeks notice. If you pay rent monthly, you have to give a calender months notice.
If you leave after 2 weeks, you still have to pay the other 2 weeks and could be taken to court if you don't.0 -
Dear both, thank you for your prompt replies. I think my rent is due fortnightly but I pay my monthly as it is easier to manage with my wages being paid monthly.
Thanks for the help and advice.
Kind regards,
Michael0
