obsolete digital TV

I have a Philips digital TV (32DW6557) which I bought in Dec 2003, in preparation for the digital switchover. However, after disconnecting my BTvision box, in Jan this year, I discovered that I couldn't receive any digital channels through my upgraded TV aerial.

On contacting Philips they apologised for "the inconvenience". (....of me spending £700 on a now obsolete digital TV) and then said that "it is not Philips fault that the government decided to change the tuner demands. I understand it upsetting but there is nothing we can do, we don't set the demands."

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Maybe with success on some sort of resolution?

Unfortunately you have suffered the penalty of being a very early adopter. Best bet is to buy a Freeview box and use your current TV with that, that will only cost you £20 up.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Yep not Philips fault at all, buy a quality HD freeview STB should see you ok for another 6 years.

    ...except:

    a) it's a CRT TV
    b) it's not HD [see also 'a)']

Re Yep not Philips fault at all,

I disagree the manufacturers alone are responsible for not fitting fully compliant tuner chips nothing to do with the government or Ofcom

The digital transmission specs have not changed since adoption and start of UK digital services circa "ITV On Digital" service early 1990s

They were compliant 6 years ago, they are not now.

    Digital transmission compression has changed.

{edit} I can kind of see a point to be upset, I suppose 6 years isn't that long.
I imagine they thought a solution would be available by the time it switch-overed, but try and think of it this way if they had included the chip-set it would have been £££ at the time, however they obviously weren't as honest as they should have been.

Correct, and Philips are not the only maker to have left customers stranded with this.
