Best account for FREE international withdrawals?

Hi!
Im going traveling for a year across S.E.A and south America.im trying to find a bank account that gives free international withdrawals or the best deal for someone like me..
Ive heard about sanatndar (or however you spell it) but when my partner went in he was told something about a credit card and payments..which is something neither of us really want to do..only for emergencies.. can anybody help? thankyouu

Nationwide's Cashcard account offers a Cirrus card that currently has no charges for ATM withdrawals, their Flex account Debit Card charges a 1% VISA fee outside the VISA Europe region of operations - see http://www.nationwide.co.uk/current_account/cash_card_account.htm

When I had a Citibank sterling account I was never charged for withdrawing Euro in Ireland or Spain. It may have changed now so it would be worth checking out.
