Hi All
I am a long time lurker but never posted anything however i am in need of some urgent help in regards to the stuff below
My card was last used by myself on the 30th of October 2009. On the 11th of November someone called Virgin pretending to be me and asked if they could transfer money to account number () my account was blocked and I was sent a letter asking to call Virgin. I never received the letter. On the 2nd of December 2009 someone called Virgin and answered various security questions including my HSBC account number they then changed my address and ordered a new card. The address was changed to somewhere in Liverpool, a new PIN was also sent. In between the 15th December and 28th December my card was used to purchase over £6900 worth of goods one big transaction in Hounslow and various others in Leicester (miles from my house). On the 4th of January at 8:58AM someone logged into Internet banking from my IP address and registered the new card (the card that was sent to Liverpool) they viewed various pages and then logged off a few minutes later. On the 5th of January someone logged in again from my IP address and 10.28AM and viewed a few pages. I rang Virgin to do a balance transfer on the 13th of January as my Paypal card is near the end of its promotional rate at this point I became aware of the fraudulent transactions and Virgin investigated for me (which I where all the above info is from).
Virgin rang me and informed me about the internet logons and said due to this they feel it was someone I know and hence I am liable for the sum (£6919). I do not understand this as my wife was the only person in the house along with my daughter whilst I was at work. I am trying to request details of websites visited from O2 who are my Internet Providers and I hope they can confirm that no virgin or mbna address was used during the during the dates times specified.
The police say that they cannot look into this as Virgin has lost the money and not myself and Virgin need to contact them in relation to this so they can investigate further. Virgin say that their investigation is closed and they have concluded that someone close to me has done this.
Please help me, I cant sleep and I am resorting to tears every night.

You may wish to remove your account details.0

In regards to the rest of your post I don't know alot about IP addresses but I believe (please correct me if I'm wrong) they are unique like your telephone number. Is your wireless password protected? If not they may not have been in your house but may have used your internet (ie next door).
Unfortunantley I can see why Virgin have reacted like this as this is standard as all the evidence points to it being someone close to you so unless you can provide any solid evidence it wasn't it's unlikely to change the situation.
Sorry I can't really help.0 -
The only way they can login via your IP is either via remote control software, or being at the computer itself. Or alternatively using your wireless internet connection from outside.
And why on earth have you posted your acct number? Remove it! - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/editpost.html?do=editpost&p=297748050 -
From memory its possible that someone has stolen your IP address, possibly via your router. Is your router wireless, and do you have it password protected?
Thats the only thing I can think of if it wasn't anyone at your actual address.
How often do you scan your computer? Do you have Anti Virus software etc?Total debt at lightbulb moment (Jan 2010): £23410

that account number is one that the people tried to do a transfer to.
My ip address is static, both computers in the house are accessible via remote desktop however only i have the details to log on. Anti virus software is running fine and upto date with no viruses being reported (microsoft security essentials). the wireless is password protected and MAC filtered
my daughter is 3 years old!
I am hoping O2 can provide the logs for me so i can have an independant company (o2) actually telling me what was accessed via my computers.
The actual account is getting charges of 12 pounds for being over the limit plus it is on a 28%APR they nabbed 25pounds from my account yesterday. if i dont pay then they say it will mess up my credit report if i pay then i will just be paying someone elses shopping spree. i need the money as it is. i just dont know what to do apart from waiting to see if o2 will supply the logs. i have also written a letter to virging asking for all details they hold on me and the fraud that has occured/investigation that they have done.0 -
Yeah IP logs from your provider is the way forward. I'm not a computer wizz, but I am not sure exactly what data that will provide you, and how long they hold the data.
Good luck with resolving this. Whatever you find out keep a copy for yourself, send one to Virgin and one to the police.
I assume Virgin have blocked the card?Total debt at lightbulb moment (Jan 2010): £23410

virgin blocked the card and sent me a new card.
i dont know what to do about the balance in the meantime, i understand it will affect my credit rating and as such i dont know what to do. the balance is 6919 pounds i have about 800pounds in my current account0 -
I would pay the minimum in the meantime, as the hassle of removing a late payment is greater than arguing over the initial fraud...0
