What chores would you expect from an 18-year-old living at home?

My older two have been doing their own washing since they were 13/14 years old.

All of them are/were expected to keep their own rooms tidy but tbh I don't stress too much about it if they are messy. I don't like overflowing bins/clothes baskets, or dirty crockery/glasses in their room but I'm ok with a bit of mess.

DD(17) walks the dog, washes up and cleans the kitchen worktops every day. She also babysits her little sister if needed.

She sometimes cooks a meal but not regularly - she often makes lunch though. We have recently decided she will chop the veg when we have a casserole as I hate doing that, but she is fine with the veg but hates dealing with the meat.

DD(8) is in charge of taking recycling out to the bin and laying/clearing the table. She put her own clothes away at the weekend and did a pretty good job of it so I may add that to her list too. She often helps sort socks and things like that, or sort washing into coloureds/whites.

I don't nag as such but they know they may as well just get on with it because I never give in for an easy life!

They tend to ignore their dad, on the other hand, as he never follows through with his threats and will eventually just do the job he has asked them to do, albeit with a lot of moaning!

I don't think I ask a lot of them but I do expect them to step in if needed iyswim? It's about respecting the people you live with for me.
  • Could you ask your DD what little extra chores she would like to help with? Maybe if she gets to choose the size and type of chore she may not mind as much. She sounds like a wonderful girl.
