Getting car insurance help needed.

I've recently been made redundant and have had to buy a car to replace my company one (I already own one which my wife has been using). So this is the first time I've owned 2 cars.
I called up more than (my existing insurers) and they told me that I can't duplicate my no claims bonus (as some toe rag vandalised my car in 2008), and I can't use my no claims bonus with other insurers as it's fixed to my first car, meaning I now have zero no claims on my new car. Is this correct?
Any advice on getting my premium down as the cheapest is £730 so far! I've tried playing with named driver/owner of policy etc. It costs about £200 more to have my wife as the policy holder as she's never had a policy.
Many thanks

It might work out cheaper to put the new car on the current morethan policy, and gain the existing NCD off that premium, and set up a new policy for the car your wife uses. (Assuming her car's basic premium is less than the basic premium for the new one)0

If you have max NCD, why won't they mirror this on another vehicle? (Which they advertise)0

I think your figures were a bit out:
1) Current car (premium after discount) is £430. Therefore with no discount would be £1229.
2) New car (less 65%) would be £578.
Add the two together = £1807, compared with the £2079 you face by keeping your discount on the "old" car.0 -
I would suggest trying ecarinsurance.
Their policy allows multilple cars.
I haven't used them but I have their bike insurance and you can have up to 4 bikes and 4 riders on one policy.
They have both good and bad features like all insurers but one of the good points is that you can add on people/vehicles on-line and because there is no manual intervention, there is no admin fee. There may well be a change in premium one way or the other (sometimes a refund) but they don't charge an amendment fee if you can do it on-line.
I would be interested to know how you get on so that I can recommend it (or not) in future.
Of course you only build/keep one lot of NCD.0 -

True. But I can get a total of £1165 doing seperately.
I've tried Admiral on a multicar policy which was interesting. I got £1215 if i use my ncb on my new car and my wife starts claiming ncb on the old car, or £1080 if I use my ncb on the new car and start on the old one.
I'll give ecarinsurance a go too....0 -
ecarinsurance is coming up as £1180.
A friend suggested that some insurance companies may consider my company car driving history. I've now got a letter from my fleet manager, but the RAC wouldn't take it into consideration as the policy was in the company's name and I was only a named driver.
Any ideas if anyone else may find a company who'd accept my history or can find a cheaper way to insure? I'm sure this can't be a too uncommon problem these days where company car drivers are losing their jobs and getting their own cars.0 -
Not sure of your age, but Saga tend to take letters along the line of:-
I confirm that Mr X has had sole use of a company vehicle, including pleasure use since xx/xx/xx until xx/xx/xx, and during that time there have been xx claims as listed below.
It has to be on your old companies letter heading, and better still a back up from the broker or insurer.
I think Tesco online may also take letters, not that they should, but as it's all done on line, the people that get to see the letters don't actually twig that it's not real ncb, just a claim free driving letter0 -
I'm 37, so probably not suitable for Saga just yet! I may give tesco a go.0
