Credit Scores - How long does it take to update?

I have just reviewed my Credit File (using the 30 day free period from Equifax and Experian and then subsequently cancelled) and I discovered that I have cards and accounts that are still open that I had totally forgotten about.
I wish to open a new account very soon (after closing all of the cards and other accounts that I don't need) but fear I will be rejected as I don't know how long it takes to update the file, days? weeks? I should note I was rejected for the same account before Christmas due to having too many accounts.
Many thanks.

When you close an account it can take 2 or 3 months for it to be marked settled on your credit file. It all depends on how sprightly the various CCs are.0

That's interesting- wonder if can ask the banks/lenders to inform the credit reference agencies when they do it! 2/3 months is a long time0
