BMW 530D Economy figures

I've been pondering with the idea of a new car, about £10K

Looking at 320D for a while but the 530D keeps jumping out at me.

Having seen and played with the iDrive system, I WANT ONE!!
Unfortunately, a 320D with iDrive is a bit over budget but a 530D with idrive (fitted as standard) is within budget.

As an example
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

The larger engine in the 530D appeals as well, but I do about 1500 Motorway miles a Month.

My current car does about 44mpg or if I have a heavy right foot, about 38.

The 530D claims about 44mpg but the reviews I am looking at are wildly different.
Some claim 45mpg, other are as low as 28mpg (unacceptable), most user reviews I can find are in the high 20's.

I appreciate it's all about how/where you drive, but I am keen to hear from an owner..

What could I reasonable expect??

Motorways about 1,500 miles a Month
Around town, about 50-60 miles a Month.

I doubt I will buy until the Snow melts lol :)

Cheers

I have a 330d (same engine, slightly lighter car!). I get 43.5mpg out out that, doing around 2000 miles a month - that's around 2/3rds motorway miles and the rest country lanes/around town. Unless your motorway miles are done at 90+, I'd expect you to better my figures.

the links not working for me so i cant see the year of car or any details about it.

Very long steady runs you will exceed 40mpg, but how much of your driving is of that type?

Certainly will drop will below 30mpg if you do much round town work.

The Ebay listing had finished, I had the picture in the cache on my PC.

Listed at £9,690 with 100K on the clock.
I'm not too overly concerned about mileage, to be honest, I would rather have a car with 100,000 motorway miles than 40,000 around town miles.
I would make that decision by what I could see in the Service History.

Would like Xenons though, I've got quite used to them now.

My journeys are 240 miles on a single motorway, with one stop for coffee on Friday, repeated on Sunday.. 3 times a Month.
Typically a couple of miles onto the Motorway, into 5th and sit there until my coffee break, speeds (without trying to antagonise everyone), about 80-85mph
  • My boss ran a Y reg 540i V8 touring and was getting 24mg.
He then swapped it for an 04 plate 530d and was getting 25mpg.
Now he has a 535d and gets about 27mpg.

Weird! that's what I am afraid of.

May go for a 320D if I can find one with satnav (idrive). I could always remap it to get more oomph (although the 320D's I have driven had been pokey enough).

I take it trading in my Saab TiD gets your approval harvey lol :D (2.2TiD though)

I had a 335d for a short while and got 29 when I tested with my own figures but the comp always said around 38. I also had a much older 530i that'd do 32 when driven in a similar way to the 335d.

Saying that, when I was doing really long m-way journeys through german autobhan at well over 100 I'd still get 500 miles on what is a really small tank so fairly impressive. I think the 320d is supposed to ridiculously frugal but don't know from first hand exp.

Also, the iDrive on that age car was really poor. I believe the newer one is far better.
  • We've got a 530i automatic which does around 27 on average, so I'd definitely expect a 530d to be getting high 30's.

If you are looking and driving BMW's dont even bother with the Saab.

And get either the 320 or 530 and then go for an 'economy' remap if thats your thing, you get a bit extra power and torque, and even better MPG, but it probably take years to realistically pay for the remap (£500 on a beemer?) using just MPG savings, and you wouldnt be using the car as it should be anyway.

And you wont be sitting in 5th in these, surely they have a nice comfy, quiet 6th gear? :j

Hi, a friend of mine has just sold his 530d auto, and is the worst driver I know, but on the motorway he always got high 40's and quite often into the 50's.

With just pure motorway driving with my 320D E90 I can get mid to high 50mpg, even the odd 60 every now and then. Just pottering round town and the average is around 43mpg. I'm not exactly a grandad on the road either ;)
