credit card debts sold - can charges still be reclaimed

In a nutshell I have had a couple of credit cards that I managed to get cleared to fairly small balances. I then became unemploed and couldn't clear. The charges started piling on and then the debt was sold to a 3rd party. They are now chasing for very hefty amounts, all relating to charges.

Having read about reclaiming credit card charges, has anyone got any advice as to whether reclaiming these charges may be an option to reduce the debt back to its original position? I should add that one of the cards original debt dates back to 2003!

Yes, but depends on which company your CC's were with.

For example, MBNA will send you a cheque for the value of the refund. However, other credit card providers may send this directly to the third party that now owns your debt.
No Longer works for MBNA as of August 2010 - redundancy money will be nice though.

no idea what my nerdnumber is - i am now officially nerd 229, no idea on my debt free date
  • Do I request the charge details form the credit card or the company that now owns the debt?
