although it is possible to take all money out of a interest free overdraft it should be noted that some transactions should happen within the account over the years- even if its a direct debit into and straight back out again. I know people that moved the whole amount of the interest free overdraft to another account and didnt touch the account again but were contacted by the bank who threatened closure of the account.

what i did (and currently still doing as i still a student) was to transfer 3/4 of the allocated int free overdraft to a high savings account and then effectively lived off the other 1/4 ensuring that it never went over. whilst this method is not foolproof and does leave me with the risk of going into the paid overdraft if you are good with your money i like it.

if you are able to visualize the -£800 as £0 and never allow you to go to -£1200 (in my case) then you will be fine, the bank the student account wont be upset...

thats just my opinions take or leave as you will.

Previously suggested that all info from loans co. comes with "How to change your account details" on it so not a problem: I'm certainly intending to use my son's current bank details when I fill in his form! (Well I want the job done now, not next year!)

Ha, ha! Savvy_Sue! Glad I'm not the only Mum who just does things like this- I've long ago given up expecting No. 1 son to get his act together and it is soooo stressful constantly having to remind him at the very last minute, so I just think "Oh sod it" and do things like form-filling myself. (Much to the lip-pursing disapproval of some friends who think he'll never learn if I constantly take care of things  ) I figure the state of my nerves deserves some consideration...... :D

You usually can't apply for a Student account without your letter from UCAS confirming your place - which if you've got conditional offers won't be until mid-August.

Just give the SLC your current account details, it's easy enough to change them when you get your student account set up.
    student100 hasn't been a student since 2007...

Absolutely! There are however things I don't do: anything to do with his driving lessons or anything else which doesn't affect ME! And since he needs to talk to me to fill the forms in anyway, what difference does it make who starts them? We know who'll get round to it first, don't we?
