redundant, what to do

hi everyone,
could you tell me if someone is made redundant and has to claim any type of benefit how much are you allowed to have in the bank before it will affect any of these benefits, no redundancy payments will be made, partner will still be working and its a joint account, thanks

  • You should get the normal jsa contribution based every two to three weeks if I remember. I took voluntary redundancy and still got my jsa after 22 years of working full time. I had just over £30k in the bank and they knew about it. You have to provide things like mortgage statements etc when you go in.

If you have made enough contributions in the relevant years (07/08 and 08/09 I think – someone more in the know will need to confirm this), you will be able to claim contributions-based JSA for 6 months. This is NOT affected by any savings you may have.

After 6 months, if you are still unemployed, you can apply for income-based JSA. However for this, your partner's income and any savings you have will be assessed.
