Payment charge received for bank error

I have just received my Council Tax bill and it states that because they havent been receiving payments they have added £79.20 to the outstanding amount. I pay weekly by standing order and at the end of the financial year in April I notified the bank THREE times with the new reference number for the new financial year. The bank had put a dash in the wrong place and therefore my money was being paid into another account. I have confirmed everything AGAIN with my bank and they have correctd the details. would I be entitled to claim this charge back from the bank afterall it wasnt my fault.

The bank should have a copy of your amendment and if the error is theirs, then they should pay the charge. If the error is yours, then they shouldnt.

You should put a complaint into the bank with evidence included of the charge.

Tend to think the first port of call is to the Council. With statements to prove that the appropriate sums were leaving your account. And, in the absence of anything (?) from the Council in the way of reminders, those sums were correctly fulfilling your CT obligation.

Talk nicely to them - show them the evidence - and they'll likely remove the charge. If not - follow the good advice in the previous post.

PS - if the dash, as you say, was in the reference? Then presumably (Sort Code / Account number correct) the money was being paid to a different account within the Council?? In which case - they have to remove the charge as they have had the benefit of the money. Albeit that was under someone else's name.
