CRB check

Can anyone help?

I am having to look for a new job at the moment, there is not a lot happening but I am noticing a lot of short term agency jobs needing a CRB

I have two

A Enhanced one issued in Nov 07

A Basic one issued in Jun 08

Are these still valid, or valid enough to qualify for these agencies? If they are not what would be the quickest way of updating them? I have thought about getting my Church to do one for me (while paying them of course)

I know that any employer has to CRB you once you start work anyway so it seems a bit of a waste of time

Thanks in advance :o

You cannot apply for a CRB check yourself and the ones you already have are the property of the agencies who obtained them and only good for those agencies. Any new employer would need to apply for a CRB check should they decide to employ you.
£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths
  • these offences will be on your crb untill the police station that issued them takes them off

Thats fair enough but its when I see job adverts that include things like this that I get confused.....

    A) Essential to have on CV (i.e. without which your CV will be automatically rejected):

    - previous business support/ administration experience
    - MUST have IT experience in a range of Microsoft packages (Word, Excel etc) and databases
    - MUST also be in posession of a current Enhanced CRB check

    B) Preference is likely to be given by the client to any CVs also able to show:

    - any local authority or other public sector experience

I am in possesion of a enhanced CRB check, its just two years old. I know that the new employer has to apply for a CRB anyway so why ask if I am in possesion of a current CRB check (which legally is not valid), I wonder if its a risk management thing

  • The CRB process is sped up if you already have an existing CRB that's been granted in the last 5 years. Potential employers may well be advertising that you need a CRB for two reasons.
    1) If you already have a recent CRB, a new one will be alot quicker to come through,
    2) If you've been cleared once, the chances are you'll be cleared again. If you've already got an offence noted on a CRB, they can look at the CRB certificate and decide straight away if that offence will stop you doing the job you've applied for.

I guess in short, an existing CRB certificate will help potential employers narrow down potential candidates for a position!

Good luck with the job hunt!
  • When I was teaching (through an agency), I had to pay for my own CRB check every three years even though I was working for the same college all the time. So it would appear from that that your enhanced CRB document could still be valid (for the job it was supplied for) until at least October next year.

You're covered - I'm in the same position (although I actually now have 3 - old job, new job, church). Good luck with the job hunt!

If you work with "vulnerable groups" you will have to register with the ISA, as well as be CRB checked in future, this is a can of worms for agencies in the care sector, as the ISA reg is a one off £64

    == Not True
Only certain employment requires a CRB - otherwise for the most part it is AIUI illegal to require CRB
