Landlord will let us install a freesat dish BUT...

...only if we leave it when we move out...?? Is this right???? Seems not very on to me! We are only forced to get freesat as she will not let us take aerial from out of the loft and put it outside (and also ALL the other houses in road have to have dishes cos the reception is SO poor)
My partner had a car crash and is at home during the day at the moment...we had always known that the picture was bad (ie 80s snowy picture bad!) and we can only get channels 1,2 and 3. But now my partner is at home, he has found that during the day, the tv has NO reception (screen goes black) for about 5 hours - this happens on average 3 times a week!! We tried normal (no dish) freeview but it doesnt work at all...
So - i have rung letting agents and they have asked landlord if we can have freesat dish etc. Landlord says yes, BUT if/when we move out we HAVE to agree to leave the dish behind.
Now correct me if i am wrong here, but we are having to pay for the installation, equipment - box etc etc....so surely it is OUR property?
Obviously it wont be in the inventory of property....how can she enforce the point? Ie, could she withhold our deposit or something if we take it??
Surely it is not too much to ask in this day and age to be able to have a working tv?!

Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?

Would the landlord agree to pay half the costs for it to be kept in the house0

i'd have thought she's within her rights to refuse you permission to install it unless she can keep it when you move out. If she has no proof of the arrangement you would probably get away with removing it when you leave though.
My landlord said I could build a two story extension if I leave it when I move out too. Kind chap.0 -

There was no mention or offer of contributing to costs. We have to pay for everything. Then she keeps it. It will be in writing as the letting agent will put it in writing. grrr - so to be able to watch any tv we have to pay £150. And she gets a free satellite dish. Great! :mad:Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Dish, LNB, wiring etc - yup, they would be yours... but you appear to have to agree to leave them... The box (satellite receiver) would be yours presumably...
The alternative would seem to be you ignore the LL & LA's terms, install the blasted thing and at the end of the tenancy remove it all and make good any damage/'oles,bits of odd wiring etc.. - I think leaving the dish & wiring would be cheaper...
Sorry to hear about your partner...0 -

why can you not just get digital terestrial tv?0

She's already mentioned she can't get signal with that.
I think the LL is concerned about what the house will look like if you take the dish down. Holes everywhere.
When I moved out of my old house we left the dish there, then got it installed again in the new place - we would of have to pay to get it reinstalled even if we took the dish anyway.
Obviously the box would still be yours.
Just think of the LL's point of view - if every tennant put up a dish, then took it down at the end of the tenancy the house would be very holey as the dish may have to be put in a different place.0 -
LL is in business to make money. (Why else be a LL??)
LL can see he can end up with an "improved" property for the next T who can more easily get Sky/Freesat - so the place will be more easily rentable...
What do you expect LL to do??
Sadly there are very very few charitable institutions renting property to individuals these days...0 -
You need permission from LL to install - simple!
You have admitted you knew you had bad reception before you rented so I think the damage that will be caused to the external brickwork must be compensated for. I would only agree if you agreed to leave it.
My tenant asked if they could install, I said yes but only if the dish was put on the chimney as a clause in my lease states where a dish/ariel can be located. Fortunately for me my tenant did not bother because the cost was too high.0 -
