Hello there,
I have a debt of about £13k last time I checked which was 3 years ago..
I build the dept from when I was 18 (now 29) on various stupid things like credit cards and loans.. I had a bad spell and got completely overwelmed by all the red letters as i was out of work for a long time. so I left my debt behind and moved without obviously informing them. They were I guess still sending red letters to my old address and still occassionaly calling me... They eventually stopped called me 3 years ago and I have heard nothing since. What is the status of my debt? Have they forgotten about me? I just got a text from the NATIONAL DEBT HELPLINE. How did they get my number?
I know it's terrible and you must think that I should pay back like the rest of you and I see your point but I am not looking for a telling off just some real, factual, professional opinions and advice
Thanks for reading

I'm in a similar position, I've lost track of who owns a couple of my debts. I'm putting an amount aside every month so that when they contact me I'll be able to offer them a full and final settlement.
As for National Debt Helpline, if they're offering IVA's etc then I keep getting calls from them or similar companies (I hang up before it gets to who they are). There's plenty of ways they could have got your number.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0 -
could you not go to Citizens Advice? Surely they could tell you what your legal rights are (if any) and maybe put a debt management plan into place in case you are required to start paying it again. I don't know, but I don't think it actually works that if you ignore them they go away! My advice would be to go to CAB and get things underwayLong Haul Supporter #203:beer:0

If you have made no payment towards a debt or acknowledged it in writing, it may become statute barred after 6 years (5 in Scotland).
The exception to this is if it is a debt owed to the local authority such as council tax or if the creditor got a court judgement (CCJ or Decree). After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91
Dad Gift 6k ¦ Savings & Inv Tst: £2,500
Loan 10k: £0 ¦ Dad 5.5k: £2,270 ¦ LTSB: £0 ¦ RBS: £0 ¦ Virgin £0 ¦ Egg £0
Total Owed: £2,270 (+6k) 11/08/20110 -
Thanks Guys! Yes Im hoping that is does become statute barred ... but there is obviously someone out there who knows I have debt otherwise how else would I be getting texts for 'We can help clear debt' companies?
I guess I should do the sensible thing and contact the Citizen advice B..
I wouldnt know if I had a county court judgement because I left the Red letters all behind, maybe I have. I am too scared to find out..
I think it would be naive (but hopeful) to think that they have just 'Written me off'..
I mean I cant get credit , I had a £600 loan from barclays though so maybe things are improving.. I jsut dont know ...
Anyway, thanks for the advice peoples!0 -
My mother just got a call last night from someone offering to clear her debts.
She doesn't have any!!
There must be a database that's been recently sold to all these companies.
To check if you have a CCJ, you can pay (i think £8) to search the registry trust webiste. If there's nothing there then you have no CCJ's. After that you just need to work out when the last payment you made towards the debts was.
