Charges for paying early!!

I've been charged two 'late payment fees' for paying my credit card monthly payments too early! I have paid more than the minimum payment in the first week of each month. My due date is in the last week of each month. I do not have a DD set up for this Nationwide 0% interest credit card and prefer to pay manually in varying amounts to clear it. Technically, the Nationwide have treated my payments as late payments for the previous month, forcing me to make additional payments within the due month - amounts I have already paid!! I have complained to them with a view that they owe ME money, not the other way around as I consider I have done nothing wrong. However, I am told that according to the credit agreement, I have to make payments as near to the due date as possible - paying three weeks before the due date is classed as an 'extra' payment, even though it is within the payment month. Can anything be done about this? I have now paid double in each month! Surely this can't be enforced?

Have you always made at least one payment between when your statement is produced and the due date?
  • Have you checked your credit agreement? Are you paying before your next statement has arrived (in whatever form)?

  • This is a new credit card I've had for three months and paid over my minimum payment each month - surely, ANY payment made within the due month that covers the minimum due is classed as a monthly payment? As you say, there must be a couple of dates that span the end of one month and the beginning of another in which payments toward the due amount is not allowed? Does this now mean it will go against my credit score?

If you insist on paying as you do without a DD, then it's your problem to ensure you pay within the correct time period.

The late payment markers will be on your record, but your biggest worry should be losing the 0% deal as you've broken the T&Cs. Call them, offer to set up a DD for minimum payment and if you're lucky they may refund some charges or reinstate the deal if it has been withdrawn, but as this has occurred twice, I think you're backing a non-starter IMHO.

If you get a bill and make a payment, but then make another payment before the next bill is produced, those funds will be classed as an extra payment and not come off next months bill.

  • This is why having a DD should be an essential for any CC or store card. This way you just pay the minimum payment off without worrying whether you are going to be charged for late payment etc, and then can make umpteen overpayments whenever you want.
