Job Interview Result time??

Hi. Went down to London for a job interview I had on thursday. Was told by the manager that they were conducting interviews that day and also on friday. Interview went really well i thought and he had me in there about 45 minutes to 50 minutes when i think the allotted time was 30 minutes.

Lost confidence since then though, didn't hear anything on friday and not heard anything monday or today. They were emailing me before the interview so would of expected a rejection by now that's all.

Anyone got any experience of wait times between interview end and a result? I haven't worked in 5 years as went to be a student, but i recall hearing back pretty much the same day for these types of office/call centre jobs. so getting a bit worried now. should i give it a week and then email/ring? safe to say i won't have got the job if i don't hear in a week though. really don't know what i'll do if i don't get this one, as have applied for about 50 or 60 jobs in the last 3 or 4 months and got 1 interview.

  • I went for a job interview once and it took them 4 weeks to offer me the job. Never found out why. No news is good news, until you get confirmation you've not got it you've got a chance. Good luck.

Yeah in a way that's what I'm thinking. I'm totally 50/50, it's not an amazing great job or anything (16k basic, plus add ons for punctuality and quality etc) but it's a start and gets me into London permanently. So i'm desperate to get it basically.

I think the guy liked me as he gave such a thorough detail of the company in the interview, like he was really trying to prepare me 100% for the job. Couple of dodgy moments at the start, but I felt like I'd brought myself back by the end. hitting him with some good points and knowledge of the company/industry etc.

Just gotta wait I guess. Suppose it's only been 2 working days since interviews ended, seems longer as im so nervous about getting that rejection email. every email that comes in im crpping myself before i open it.

Just be aware that some companies are now not polite enough to tell you that you haven't got the job until you chase them.

However it's not been a week so don't go chasing them.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

The other thing to bear in mind re timings:-
if they were interviewing Friday as well, a decent company would wait until completing all interviews before offering the job. Then they would offer to their first choice, who would probably be given at least 24-48 hours to confirm acceptance - only after that would they send out the 'thanks, but no thanks' letters.
I've known situations where the first person offered turned it down, so the 'next best' was the lucky one, also that someone was interviewed for one post didn't get that, but were offered an alternative.
So don't give up hope just yet!

As said its normally not a good sign. Very few companies tell unsucessful candidates until references are through.

I don't know what type of work experience you have, but that's not usually the case at all. Do you mean that companies look up references for successful candidates before informing those who have been unsuccessful? Or do you mean that companies will only decide whether or not someone can be given a job offer on the grounds that their references come through first?

Relatively few employers require that references must be researched before an offer of employment (and 99% of the time, they'll inform candidates of this procedure). Added to that, quite few employment sectors actually need references to be in place before employment is offered and/or properly commenced, i.e. banks need to run credit checks, schools need to run CRB checks, etc.

More common is this approach: "you have been successful, pending references", which usually means yes, come on board, but don't settle in too much, we still need to chase up your references.

In any instance, offers are usually made before references are taken up, and if references need to be completed before the person can start their job (partially or fully), they'll be informed of that fact.

What about people who are still working, and are jobhunting on the sly? Asking a current employer for references before the candidate has made any notification of their intention to leave can bring about some really sticky situations!

I think its a bit too early to assume rejection yet. If the manager may have wanted to see the Friday people before deciding anything. Was the manager the only interviewer or were their other interviewers? Decisions always take longer the more people involved just because of the logistics of getting them in a meeting room at the same time (and that's before they start talking!)

Even if the hiring was down to the manager you saw on Thursday then he may have been sick on Monday & Tuesday!

    Good luck!

I think Anihilator might be on the right track on this one (never thought I'd say that). The only time I've not heard quickly about a job interview is when I wasn't the first choice and the person who was offered the job was taking a long time to make a decision/negotiate the salary. So the company aren't going to say no thanks until they actually have an agreement that their first choice will take the job.

That's not to say the OP won't be offered the job because of course until you hear otherwise there is always the chance! In my case I had the interview on the Wednesday and I didn't get a firm answer until the following Tuesday. Amusingly 2 months later the guy they offered the job to left and they came back to me and offered it to me then.

Oh dear what are you on about.

My post made perfect sense. However to simplify it just a tad more for you. If you apply for a job, get an interview, and don't hear very soon after the interview the most likely explaination is that the job has been offered to someone else, and the company are waiting for this person to accept or for references. Only once firm acceptance is received do they then notify the other candidates that they have been unsucessful. This is so if it falls through the other candidates havent already been told they are unsucessful.

Of course there is a small chance the interviewers havent had time to meet etc but this is far less likely than the above. If you are a recruiter and you pencil in time for interviews, you also pencil in, normally immediately after for decisions.

And I have a job. Its just a pleasure to upset thick little trolls like yourself who think they know it all and are actually very hard done by when in reality they just think their better than they are!
