ValueMyStuffNow - Has anybody tried this website?

Has anybody tried this website to have his antiques valued?

I read an article in The Telegraph, 'How to make extra cash online', about ValueMyStuffNow. It looks to be cheap but managed by experienced professionals...

Thanks for your help

Yes I tried it a couple of weeks ago.

Submitted an old lamp my grandma had and found out it was worth about £200.

We knew nothing about it accept it had been in the family a while and they emailed a valuation which explained the history of it and also it was very quick.

    Would reccomend :j

I know this response is a little after the event but ........
I am very sceptical about this and other similar services. You most certainly cannot identify, grade and value jewellery, gemstones and diamonds this way. I cannot speak for other disciplines.

I do have a vested interest in stating the above (I am a professional jewellery valuer and gemmologist) but this doesn't dilute the truth of the statement.
My principal concern is the consequences that may occur as a result of a consumer taking an action, in one form or another, when based on totally inaccurate information (or at least a value based on totally inaccurate information).

Yes, I have tried this particular service out of curiosity, to say I was "less than impressed with the result" is the understatement of the year.
The main problem is that at best the Expert only has a photograph and probably a sketchy description written by the owner to work on. This could be fine if it is a collectable postcard or something similar but jewellery ...... this is really asking for trouble.

I have written more on this subject on my blog, under the category "Consumer Advice" - Valuations by sense of smell

If you are going to take some action based on a valuation from an online valuation service, please read this article before taking the plunge. I fear many people are going to find themselves in a sticky situation otherwise.

    Kind regards to all

    Adrian
