Card cloned!!

Hi, just a quick question to set my Dad's mind at rest.

He banks with Barclays and a few days ago received a call to say they put a stop on his account as his card had been cloned. He used it at home the same day someone else used it thousands of miles away.

Anyway they emptied his account. :(

Barclays are sending out a new card for him, but he's not sure if they will reimburse him the full amount that was stolen.
I assume as they are aware it's fraud ( them stopping the card and contacting him) that it would be covered. But he's going out of his mind with worry waiting to see.

Does anyone know for sure?

Thanks in advance :)

Thank you very much for that. He'll be over the moon and can rest easy now. :)

That depends though doesn't it, I thought they would not do that in every case hence the reason they sell debit card protection.

If it is clearcut a counterfeit card in which the OP says his father was spending here and then spends going through thousands of miles away, it is counterfeit. The transactional data will verify this too.

You only have to be worried if the chip on the front of the card is read and claiming that the transactions aren't his.
  • I had my card cloned a few years ago. My card was stopped and I went to the bank to see what was going on, the chirpy lady behind the counter asked "were you in Lithuania yesterday afternoon?"....

    erm...

    no...

    no I wasn't...

They took about 320 quid from me but I got it all back, what I'd like to know is how did someone in Lithuania get my details? I'm really protective now of my PIN and stuff, I generally go into a bank to use one of their machines if I'm drawing out money.

Wherever you use your credit/debit card is at risk where you enter a PIN number.
It may not just be from an ATM compromise but even if you have used the card in a petrol station, restaraunt, supermarket-in fact anywhere where you enter your PIN.

It may not look apparent that the PED (PIN entry device) has been compromised when you go in the shop to pay for your goods as the clever bliters buy unwanted PEDS on eBay and other sources, take them apart, compromise the internal components put them back together and you would never know the difference.

It only takes for them to know someone in the merchant so they have the oppurtunity to swap the good PED with a compromised one.

It is scary as the likes of Somerfield, Sainsbury's, Shell all well known companies we trust have had this happen and continues to happen.

capital one stopped my card yesterday and we went through recent transactions but no fraud on the account, they said my card may of been found on the internet, they havent given me a reason yet as it just happened but i re-read the terms and it does say as long as you werent party to the losses (i.e. lending your card or otherwise knowing it was being used) then your covered.
im keen to find out how tho as i protect it 100% all the time, even has the securecode password on it!

Yeah a lot of companies mark cards where they have identified a commonality with other cards being used fraudulently and have shopped at the same places, but it can be inconvenient for genuine spenders but I would prefer that to happen than receice my statement with a load of unrecognised transactions!
