BT out of contract b/band cancellation charge!

Does anybody know if it is correct that BT can charge me £25 for cancelling my broadband if i am out of contract.
I do not recall this being in my contract, BT advised me the charge is for "the collection of equipment installed at the exchange for the internet connection to be possible years ago"
Apparently it is one BT dept that pays another! No one i have spoken to outside of BT has any knowledge of this. We pay by direct debit. Can anyone advise on wether this is correct or just another BT money spinner! PLEASE !

The charge is correct and BT are not the only company who charge this. If you cease your service without transferring with a MAC code to another provider, or move it with you to a new address you are charged £25 for disconnection for the work done at the exchange. It is a wholesale charge issued to providers at point of disconnection.0

It's not one dept paying another. BT Retail have to pay OpenReach. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

If you are moving to another ISP (not cable) you do not cancel, but get a MAC number and supply that to your new provider, no cancellation fee involved.0

Hi sinks,
Aerostar is correct, if you obtain a Migration Authorisation Code or MAC for short the £25.00 will not be applied. If there is anything I can help you with then drop me an email btcare@bt.com with your details and MSE - sinks - Jon in the subject line.
