Hi guys,
Ive been living at my current property since july 2008 and just found out that my current energy supplier has been charging me for my electric on an economy 7 meter (which i never knew i had)the thing is i changed to my current supplier from another earlier in the year, so was with the previous supplier for nearly a year also being charged through economy 7 meter when i have central heating. I have no bills from the first supplier (as it was a long time ago and i shread my bills) and dont know if im entitled to a recalculation or if that they can do it or that im entitled to a refund of the difference??. Now i know why my electric bills were expensive!! need some help/advice please!!??

Do you have an Economy 7 meter, have you checked? If you have two sets of dials on the meter labelled high and low or day and night then yes you have an E7 meter. Did you ever tell the electricity provider that you had central heating installed instead of (presumably) your old storage heaters?Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0

The company will have gone with the information from the industry showing you had a 2 rate meter. This will also have been on each bill you received so really would have been your responsibility to pick up on this.
It comes down purely to the goodwill of a company if they were to rebill you as they do not need to.I have occasionally seen rebilling as producing a higher bill so do your sums before checking this. I am 95% certain you will lose out with your previous supplier for the same reasons.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0 -
What business is it of the supplier? Why should they override a customer's choice to use E7? You took the tariff. It is up to you to change if you think it is not for you.0

Hi annabananax - It appears that some previous owner of your home, installed Gas CH as a replacement for the original Electric night storage system, but then failed to inform the electricity supplier of the change, which means that however many times you change supplier, the fact that you have an Eco 7 meter will still be passed on from one to another.
Get on to your current supplier and advise them of the problem - Some suppliers will simply add the the consumption of the 2 meters together and charge it at the Standard rate,
others will change your meter for free, and some will want to charge you for changeing the meter - So depending on the policy of your present supplier, you may have to change suppliers to get a free meter change.
Don't feel foolish about this - The original error was made by a previous owner and it happens all the time, but having used this section of the site be a regular reader as it's about the only education centre in existance for understanding your utility bills

Recently customer's without storage heating were able to beenfit from the E7 tarriff's so consumer's like yourself were able to get the est of both worlds so to speak. This changed with the most price changes, so that in the majority of cases only consumers with storage heating will be able to be reap the benefits.
In real terms this means you will need to make sure whichever supplier you with are billing you on the single-rate version of any tarriff you are with. Some supplier can't or won't do this, they'll take the stance that because you have a two-rate meter you cna only have a two-rate meter.0
