Railcard

At the beginning of December, I shall turn 26. I have a 16-25 Railcard which expires in July 2010 - someone told me that if I bought another one as close to my birthday as possible, I can get a whole year more out of it (i.e. until December 2010) - is this true? Although I'm studying for a Master's Degree, it's only an OU one and so therefore I can't qualify for it after 25.

Yes it's true, you can buy one the day before your 25th birthday and use it for a year.0

Since you already have one, you would be paying the price of a railcard for an extra four months. Maybe not such a great deal, depending on your plans for the summer.0 -

If you make one long distance trip you'd make your money back i.e. the cost of return from Manchester to London would probably be about the same price buying a railcard and the ticket cost (at young person price) as just an adult ticket. So if you made another journey or so within that 4 months you'd have more than made your money back, especially if you are travelling regularly or long distance.0 -
network railcards work in a similar manner if you are on certain train routes0

Not much help to the OP, but it may help someone...
A three year YP railcard is available at £65.00.
The 3-year Railcard can be purchased up until the day before your 24th birthday.
This means that if purchased in a timely manner, it will remain valid until the day before your 27th birthday.
You are also protecting yourself from three year's future price increases.
It can only be purchased online... see the railcard website.0 -
My understanding is that Open University students don't count, neither do part-time students (even though I still have to travel about the country to tutorials and visit libraries etc.!)MoneySavingMouse wrote: »You can still get 16-25 railcards if you are over 26 if you are a student.0
