work contract changes

hi
my son arrived at his works office today, and was handed a piece of paper by the manager and was told to sign it.
when he asked what it was he was told,
"we have been having a spate of minor bumps with the company vans just lately, and have decided that if it was the drivers fault, then they should pay the excess £500"
when my son said that he had not had any accidents and was not happy to sign it,
the manager replied "well most of the others have signed so why wont you?
"?
my son said it was unfair as someone could hit his wing mirror and leave without giving details, and the firm would say well you must have caused it then, and he would have a £500 bill taken from his wages,
also if the repair was minor say £50 the firm would not let him just pay for the repair,
they would insist on going through the insurance costing him a lot more.
is this legal. can they do this?

No need to sign.
Company can claim damages for negligence on the part of the employee through normal civil procedures - with the advantage that it is not the company which determines liability.
Tell that to the boss.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

I maybe wrong but i think the poster ment that the company could take your son to a small claims court to recover the money. My advice don't sign till he has seen the CAB or a body like that...0
